It’s very frustrating when your dog won’t listen to you and at times it almost seems as if he goes out of his way to get you frustrated doesn’t it?
I know it seems like your dog is doing that on purpose but in actuality he’s doing that because he doesn’t really understand what you want him to do.
Why? It can be a couple of reasons.
1. You have not consistently taken the time to teach him the command well enough and/or in enough different places for him to truly learn it.
2. Everyone or just you uses different words and different hand signals to convey a command. Here’s an example. If you want your dog to lay down you will say down. BUT, do you also say down when you want him “off the couch”. See how he can get confused.
3. When dogs get confused it creates anxiety for them. Anxiety contributes to bad dog behavior.
So what does obedience training do for you and your dog?
Dog obedience training teaches your dog to listen to you. It creates a way for you to communicate with your dog that he will understand.
Having your dog give you a sit or a down before he gets what he wants from you is an easy, non-confrontational way to help your dog learn manners.
It also teaches your dog that when you speak, he responds to you with the appropriate behavior you’ve taught them. This is very much like teaching your children to politely ask for things.
And like children it also reinforces your role at the leader in the relationship as you train your dog on a consistent basis.
Obedience training is also a cornerstone of fixing dog behavior issues. When you are trying to stop a dog from doing a certain behavior like jumping up you must train them for the behavior you would prefer, like sit.
Here’s an example of how we use obedience training daily with our lab.
When I get home from work Sammy our lab knows I have my treat bag on and he wants me to stuff a Kong with the treats.
But, he has to earn that.
My process: I come in and great my wife and my dogs (in that order then I wash my hands and put away my training equipment.
Now all this time Sammy knows the procedure and knows exactly when I’m going to stuff the Kong and hand them out to each dog.
The minute I’m done stuffing the Kong, Sammy knows he must give me a sit at a minimum and many occasions I will also ask for a down or “go to place”. He does these commands perfectly. His reward for doing what I ask—his stuffed Kong.
See how simple that can be. The more creative and fun you get with your dog, the more you dog will enjoy and look forward to doing what you ask. It’s all about the relationship.
My job is to teach you the simple steps to get there.
We do this together in your home.
In home dog training lessons, around distractions that are relevant to your life and your lifestyle, in my opinion is the most effective training.
I will teach you, in simple, easy to understand lessons.
With my 25+ years of dog training I know how to put a system of basic dog obedience training into place with your dog that works for both of you.
You can partner with your dog and have an awesome relationship.
Sound good? Great, I look forward to helping you and your dog!
