Should Your Dog Be on the Couch

Just When Can Your Dog Be On The Couch?

It depends.

If you can sit by your dog on the couch and get your dog off the couch whenever you want – no problem.

However, if you go over to sit by your dog who’s hogging the couch only to have him growl at you for trying to move him so you can sit on your own couch – you have a problem.

It could also escalate.

In the video below, I give you 3 tips that will help you fix your growling dog.

  • TIP #1 – Set rules in your home for your dog.
  • TIP #2 – Take back your couch
  • TIP #3 – Practice makes perfect

TIP #1  Setting Rules for Your Dog to Live By is Critical

Require your dog to sit for everything. Your dog will feel much less stressed and anxious knowing what to do and when to do it.

TIP #2 Take Back YOUR Couch

If you dog is “growling – guarding” your couch when he’s on it, it’s time to take back your space and implement a new rule of no furniture.

How do you do this? Simply put a leash on your dog when in the house and when he gets on the couch say, “Off!” and gently guide him off with the leash.

Teach him to settle down by your feet in front of the couch. Having your foot on the leash will prevent his “jumping on the couch.”

Remember, having a leash on your bossy dog in the house will give you the leverage you need to better control your dog when you need to.

Initially stuff a Kong toy to pacify him as he adjusts to “no furniture.”

TIP #3  Practice Makes Perfect

Practice with your dog until he no longer wants to get on the couch. You may find that this may take 4-6 weeks of daily work.

Later, if you want your dog on the couch, then implement rules for getting on the couch.

In other words, he shouldn’t be able to get on the couch (if you’re on it) unless he is invited up by you AND he does a sit first.

Remember, it’s always better to prevent dog behavior problems by instituting rules from the start.

In other words, it’s always easier to train the manners you want rather than constantly correcting what you don’t like.

Irene: It’s the same problem but with an additional twist since now your husband is on the couch, the dog is on the couch so now the dog has 2 resources on the couch. There are different elements that need to be addressed with this scenario JIm

We’ve used this approach and it works well for us. The problem now is when someone else comes to the couch when my husband and the dog are on it, our dog growls. Do we make her get off and then have the next person sit before the dog is invited back up? My husband wants to be able to sit with the dog on the couch so his preference is to allow the dog on the couch. My preference is not to have the dog growl!
