Philosophically, our Petiquette training system — The Burwell Method™ — focuses on three specific areas in the human-canine relationship: leadership, exercise and training. When you provide all three of these gifts to your dog, you will be able to effectively manage or eliminate unwanted canine behavior. Each of the three gifts influences a dog’s appreciation of the other two.
First, your role as a leader should be clearly defined. That is, your dog must understand that it is subordinate to you. Once the dog is comfortable with its strong “sense of place” as a follower behavioral issues are greatly diminished.
Exercise of the dog, such as a daily walk with you, again emphasizes your leadership role and also manages the dog’s energy, giving the dog a constructive as opposed to destructive outlet for this energy.
Obedience training teaches your dog to listen and respond (creates communication) and gives him or her an understanding of control commands, such as “sit,” “down” and “place” as appropriate behaviors to which you can redirect inappropriate behavior. Training also reinforces your leadership role as you train your dog on a consistent basis. Learn more about the home training programs offered through Jim Burwell's Petiquette.
You can now see some connections among leadership, exercise and training and appreciate their impact on behavior management. Your ability to understand how to build a strong foundation in the first two areas, enables you to more effectively perform in the third and most critical area, which makes you a good behavior manager.
